Where is Hakim Beg?

Hakim Beg is a village in Dera Baba Nanak tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Ramdas, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Fatehgarh Churian community development block and is served by the Hakit Beg gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028956, and it covers 79 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 361 people in Hakim Beg: 188 men and 173 women, living in 66 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 79 hectares, the population density works out to about 457 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 920 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 44, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 123 people, about 34 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 69.72 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.64 per cent and women at 61.54 per cent. The census recorded 143 workers, about 40 per cent of the village. Of the 98 main workers, the largest group, 46, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 28 other workers in trade, transport and services and 19 household industry workers. A further 45 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Hakim Beg's land. Of the village's 79 hectares, 72 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (72 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 48 cultivators and 12 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
