Where is Sadda?

Sadda is a village in Dinanagar tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Gurdaspur, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dorangala community development block and is served by the Saddda gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028142, and it covers 153 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 662 people in Sadda: 339 men and 323 women, living in 118 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 153 hectares, the population density works out to about 433 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 953 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 98, about 15 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 54 people, about 8 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 70.21 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.36 per cent and women at 66.91 per cent. The census recorded 186 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 181 main workers, the largest group, 92, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 78 cultivators on their own land and 11 agricultural labourers. A further 5 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Sadda's land. Of the village's 153 hectares, 135 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 117 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (117 hectares). About 17 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 78 cultivators and 12 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Dinanagar, the tehsil headquarters, and Gurdaspur town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Ganja, Ganji and Magar Mudian.
