Where is Thinda?

Thinda is a village of Dasua tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Urmar Tanda, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhunga community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030867, and it covers 105 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 590 people in Thinda: 307 men and 283 women, living in 126 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 105 hectares, the population density works out to about 562 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 922 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 47, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 250 people, about 42 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 92.82 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 96.84 per cent and women at 88.37 per cent. The census recorded 282 workers, about 48 per cent of the village. Of the 225 main workers, the largest group, 174, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 51 cultivators on their own land. A further 57 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Thinda's land. Of the village's 105 hectares, 83 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 76 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (76 hectares). About 22 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
