Where is Jalalgarh?

Jalalgarh is a village of Amargarh tehsil in Malerkotla district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Malerkotla, about 25 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Malerkotla-I community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039494, and it covers 315 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 646 people in Jalalgarh: 336 men and 310 women, living in 137 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 315 hectares, the population density works out to about 205 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 923 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 63, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 215 people, about 33 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.61 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.38 per cent and women at 63.27 per cent. The census recorded 209 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 182 main workers, the largest group, 84, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 51 agricultural labourers and 36 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 27 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (48 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (237 hectares). About 29 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Amargarh, the tehsil headquarters, and Malerkotla town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Bhumsi, Chaunda, Dhiro Majra and Hussainpura.
