Where is Alewali?

Alewali is a village in Nakodar tehsil of Jalandhar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Nakodar, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Shahkot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029907, and it covers 216 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 603 people in Alewali: 319 men and 284 women, living in 124 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 216 hectares, the population density works out to about 279 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 890 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 76, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 466 people, about 77 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 71.35 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 78.39 per cent and women at 63.78 per cent. The census recorded 267 workers, about 44 per cent of the village. Of the 257 main workers, the largest group, 122, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 94 agricultural labourers and 39 cultivators on their own land. A further 10 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Alewali's land. Of the village's 216 hectares, 199 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (4 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (195 hectares). About 17 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 39 cultivators and 101 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
