Where is Chuhar?

Chuhar is a village of Nakodar tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Nakodar, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nakodar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029876, and it covers 390 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,231 people in Chuhar: 612 men and 619 women, living in 250 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 390 hectares, the population density works out to about 316 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1011 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 155, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 475 people, about 39 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.02 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 79.77 per cent and women at 72.39 per cent. The census recorded 415 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 401 main workers, the largest group, 206, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 124 agricultural labourers and 71 cultivators on their own land. A further 14 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Nakodar, the tehsil headquarters, and Jalandhar town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Baupur, Kotla Sudan, Rahimpur (Nakodar) and Kang Sahibrai.
