Where is Mokhe?

Mokhe is a village of Jalandhar West tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Jalandhar, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Jalandhar (West) community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030470, and it covers 172 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 772 people in Mokhe: 393 men and 379 women, living in 173 households, an average of about 4.5 people per household. Spread over its 172 hectares, the population density works out to about 449 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 964 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 94, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 392 people, about 51 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.42 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.24 per cent and women at 74.56 per cent. The census recorded 250 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 228 main workers, the largest group, 177, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 44 cultivators on their own land and 6 agricultural labourers. A further 22 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Mokhe's land. Of the village's 172 hectares, 156 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (29 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (127 hectares). About 16 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Neighbouring villages include Ispur, Lohian, Bansian and Randhawa Masandan.
