Where is Sohal Jagir?

Sohal Jagir is a village of Shahkot tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Shahkot, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Shahkot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029820, and it covers 569 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,643 people in Sohal Jagir: 846 men and 797 women, living in 343 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 569 hectares, the population density works out to about 289 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 942 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 162, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 377 people, about 23 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 77.38 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 79.63 per cent and women at 75.03 per cent. The census recorded 727 workers, about 44 per cent of the village. Of the 666 main workers, the largest group, 352, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 232 cultivators on their own land and 80 agricultural labourers. A further 61 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Shahkot, the tehsil headquarters, and Jalandhar town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Kanian Kalan, Saleman, Kotla Surajmal and Talwandi Sanghra.
