Where is Lal Bai?

Lal Bai is a village in Gidderbaha tehsil of Sri Muktsar Sahib district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Gidderbaha, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Lambi community development block and is served by the Lal Bai - I gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035319, and it covers 1,866 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 4,942 people in Lal Bai: 2,611 men and 2,331 women, living in 947 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 1,866 hectares, the population density works out to about 265 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 893 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 572, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,021 people, about 41 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 62.04 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.28 per cent and women at 56.23 per cent. The census recorded 1,873 workers, about 38 per cent of the village. Of the 1,468 main workers, the largest group, 683, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 482 agricultural labourers and 292 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 405 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
