Where is Dharaur?

Dharaur is a village in Ludhiana East tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Sahnewal, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dehlon community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033506, and it covers 375 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,715 people in Dharaur: 1,429 men and 1,286 women, living in 512 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 375 hectares, the population density works out to about 724 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 900 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 253, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,223 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 84.28 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 89.88 per cent and women at 78.16 per cent. The census recorded 1,085 workers, about 40 per cent of the village. Of the 804 main workers, the largest group, 623, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 109 cultivators on their own land and 37 agricultural labourers. A further 281 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
