Where is Dheri?

Dheri is a village of Ludhiana East tehsil in Ludhiana district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Ludhiana, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ludhiana-II community development block and is served by the Dheri , Sadhu Singh Nagar gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033482, and it covers 238 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,236 people in Dheri: 675 men and 561 women, living in 254 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 238 hectares, the population density works out to about 519 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 831 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 154, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 135 people, about 11 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 75.14 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 81.77 per cent and women at 67.27 per cent. The census recorded 337 workers, about 27 per cent of the village. Of the 266 main workers, the largest group, 216, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 37 agricultural labourers and 8 household industry workers. A further 71 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Dheri's land. Of the village's 238 hectares, 223 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (223 hectares). About 15 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 33 cultivators and 46 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
