Gaunsgarh is a village in Ludhiana East tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Ludhiana, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ludhiana-II community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033470, and it covers 480 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 909 people in Gaunsgarh: 479 men and 430 women, living in 170 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 480 hectares, the population density works out to about 189 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 898 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 87, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 85 people, about 9 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 85.4 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 85.88 per cent and women at 84.89 per cent. The census recorded 385 workers, about 42 per cent of the village. Of the 266 main workers, the largest group, 113, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 97 cultivators on their own land and 46 agricultural labourers. A further 119 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (435 hectares). About 45 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
