Where is Johlan?

Johlan is a village in Raikot tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Raikot, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Raikot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033731, and it covers 1,211 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,727 people in Johlan: 1,947 men and 1,780 women, living in 698 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 1,211 hectares, the population density works out to about 308 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 914 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 407, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,498 people, about 40 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.98 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 76.3 per cent and women at 69.37 per cent. The census recorded 1,204 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 1,145 main workers, the largest group, 498, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 349 agricultural labourers and 257 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 59 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. With 519 cultivators and 362 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include kalsian, Shehbazpura, Mohamadpura and Rajgarh.
