Where is Maddepur?

Maddepur is a village in Jagraon tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Nakodar, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sidhwan Bet community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033852, and it covers 533 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,186 people in Maddepur: 620 men and 566 women, living in 196 households, an average of about 6.1 people per household. Spread over its 533 hectares, the population density works out to about 223 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 913 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 165, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 914 people, about 77 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.99 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 76.81 per cent and women at 56.57 per cent. The census recorded 526 workers, about 44 per cent of the village. Of the 343 main workers, the largest group, 238, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 97 cultivators on their own land and 8 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 183 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Maddepur's land. Of the village's 533 hectares, 502 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (311 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (191 hectares). About 31 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 113 cultivators and 405 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
