Where is Satiana?

Satiana is a village in Ludhiana East tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Machhiwara, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ludhiana-II community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033396, and it covers 231 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 406 people in Satiana: 225 men and 181 women, living in 76 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 231 hectares, the population density works out to about 176 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 804 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 39, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 197 people, about 49 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.75 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 81.28 per cent and women at 62.2 per cent. The census recorded 195 workers, about 48 per cent of the village. Of the 191 main workers, the largest group, 96, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 67 other workers in trade, transport and services and 28 agricultural labourers. A further 4 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Satiana's land. Of the village's 231 hectares, 218 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (218 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 98 cultivators and 28 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
