Where is Toga Heri?

Toga Heri is a village in Amargarh tehsil of Malerkotla district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Malerkotla, about 22 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Malerkotla-I community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039528, and it covers 93 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 266 people in Toga Heri: 137 men and 129 women, living in 50 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 93 hectares, the population density works out to about 286 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 942 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 43, about 16 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 111 people, about 42 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.86 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 90.18 per cent and women at 77.48 per cent. The census recorded 62 workers, about 23 per cent of the village. Of the 62 main workers, the largest group, 28, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 19 cultivators on their own land and 15 agricultural labourers.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Toga Heri's land. Of the village's 93 hectares, 87 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (87 hectares). About 6 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 19 cultivators and 15 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Amargarh, the tehsil headquarters, and Malerkotla town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Bhari Mansa, Rampur Bhindran, Chatriwala and Giga Majra.
