Where is Mianpur?

Mianpur is a village in Tarn Taran tehsil of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Amritsar, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Attari community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037866, and it covers 360 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,964 people in Mianpur: 1,012 men and 952 women, living in 341 households, an average of about 5.8 people per household. Spread over its 360 hectares, the population density works out to about 546 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 941 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 234, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 670 people, about 34 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.18 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 71.73 per cent and women at 60.24 per cent. The census recorded 599 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 504 main workers, the largest group, 266, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 176 cultivators on their own land and 38 agricultural labourers. A further 95 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (29 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (280 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day.
