History
Moosa was, until a decade ago, an unremarkable village of Mansa district — wheat fields, a gurdwara, a government school, the rhythms of the Malwa's cotton belt. Its transformation began when a local boy, Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, left for Canada as a student and returned to Punjab's consciousness as Sidhu Moose Wala, the singer-rapper whose 2017 breakout 'So High' made him the voice of a generation. He named himself for his village, and the village's name travelled with him to concert stages from Toronto to Melbourne.
On 29 May 2022, Moose Wala was shot dead near Jawaharke village in Mansa district, a day after his security was scaled down. He was 28. The killing — for which the investigation pointed to inter-gang rivalry — sent shockwaves through Punjab and the global Punjabi diaspora. Moosa became overnight a place of mourning and then of pilgrimage: fans from across the world visit his memorial and the family home, and his songs, released posthumously, continue to top charts.
Geography & people
Moosa lies a few kilometres from Mansa town, the district headquarters, in the south-western Malwa at about 215 metres above sea level. It is a Jat Sikh farming village of the cotton belt — wheat in winter, cotton and paddy in summer — with the brick lanes, gurdwara and school typical of the region. The village's population is a few thousand; its fame has brought new roads, signboards and a constant trickle of visitors.
The villagers, by most accounts, guard the family's privacy while welcoming the fans — a balance the village has had to learn quickly.
Places of interest
The memorial to Sidhu Moose Wala — with its larger-than-life statue and the singer's beloved vehicles — is the village's landmark, drawing visitors daily. The family haveli stands nearby. The village gurdwara and the surrounding cotton fields show Moosa's other face: the ordinary Malwa village behind the extraordinary fame. Mansa town, with its district courts and markets, is minutes away.
Notable people
Moosa's notable person needs no introduction: Sidhu Moose Wala (11 June 1993 – 29 May 2022), born Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu in this village. In a career of barely five years he became the most-streamed Punjabi artist of his generation, a songwriter whose lyrics about village pride, guns and grief defined an era of Punjabi music — and whose death made his village's name known on every continent.
