Where is Dehdana?

Dehdana is a village of Patran tehsil in Patiala district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Ghagga, about 2 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Patran community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036288, and it covers 860 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,647 people in Dehdana: 1,914 men and 1,733 women, living in 663 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 860 hectares, the population density works out to about 424 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 905 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 450, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 713 people, about 20 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 59.27 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.32 per cent and women at 50.3 per cent. The census recorded 1,253 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 1,170 main workers, the largest group, 519, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 324 other workers in trade, transport and services and 197 agricultural labourers. A further 83 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Dehdana's land. Of the village's 860 hectares, 784 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 766 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (551 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (215 hectares). About 72 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 531 cultivators and 211 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
