Where is Mehaun?

Mehaun is a village of Dudhan Sadhan tehsil in Patiala district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Sanaur, about 20 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhunerheri community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036735, and it covers 515 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,694 people in Mehaun: 898 men and 796 women, living in 299 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 515 hectares, the population density works out to about 329 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 886 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 240, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 742 people, about 44 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 59.77 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 65.76 per cent and women at 52.94 per cent. The census recorded 527 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 510 main workers, the largest group, 167, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 164 other workers in trade, transport and services and 154 cultivators on their own land. A further 17 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Mehaun's land. Of the village's 515 hectares, 476 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (99 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (377 hectares). About 39 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 154 cultivators and 176 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Dudhan Sadhan, the tehsil headquarters, and Patiala, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Bangran, Bahadurpur Fakiran and Hajipur.
