Where is Patran?

Patran is a village in Patran tehsil of Patiala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Patran, about 1 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Patran community development block and is served by the Pind Patran gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036271, and it covers 450 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,322 people in Patran: 1,242 men and 1,080 women, living in 470 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 450 hectares, the population density works out to about 516 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 870 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 300, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 387 people, about 17 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 64.24 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.54 per cent and women at 56.98 per cent. The census recorded 791 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 660 main workers, the largest group, 420, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 157 agricultural labourers and 73 cultivators on their own land. A further 131 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Patran's land. Of the village's 450 hectares, 249 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (33 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (216 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 77 cultivators and 240 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Schools and facilities

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, one government middle school, one government secondary school and one government senior secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 12. The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

No health facility was recorded inside the village in 2011. Treated tap water was available in the village. It also had a PDS ration shop, mobile phone coverage and an internet common service centre. Banking was available in the village itself, with a commercial bank branch, a cooperative bank branch and an ATM. Domestic electricity supply was recorded at 12 hours a day.
