History

Sardulgarh is a mandi town in the southern part of Mansa district, close to the Haryana border. The 'garh' in its name points to some older fortified or commanding site, though the town today is a straightforward agricultural market centre.

It grew as the grain market and administrative stop for the surrounding villages. When Mansa district was created in 1992, Sardulgarh became part of the new district, and it remains the main town for the southern tehsil.

Geography & people

Sardulgarh lies in the flat southern Malwa plain, in cotton, wheat and mustard country near the state border. Life here follows the farming seasons.

The 2011 census counted 19,219 residents. The town is the bazaar and service centre for the border-area villages around it, and Punjabi is the everyday language.

Places of interest

The grain market, the local gurdwaras and the old bazaar are the town's landmarks. In harvest season the mandi is worth seeing in full swing.

Sardulgarh is known for its farmers, traders and kabaddi players; the area's youth are active in rural sports.

ਸਰਦੂਲਗੜ੍ਹ ਮਾਨਸਾ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ, ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਹੱਦ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਇੱਕ ਮੰਡੀ-ਕਸਬਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ 'ਗੜ੍ਹ' ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕਿਸੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਗੜ੍ਹੀ ਜਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਥਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਇਸ਼ਾਰਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਕਸਬਾ ਆਲੇ-ਦੁਆਲੇ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡਾਂ ਲਈ ਅਨਾਜ ਮੰਡੀ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਸਕੀ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਹੋਇਆ। 1992 ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਨਸਾ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਬਣਨ ਉੱਤੇ ਇਹ ਨਵੇਂ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।

ਸਰਦੂਲਗੜ੍ਹ ਮਾਲਵੇ ਦੇ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਮੈਦਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਥਿਤ ਹੈ। ਇਲਾਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਰਮਾ, ਕਣਕ ਅਤੇ ਸਰ੍ਹੋਂ ਦੀ ਖੇਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

2011 ਦੀ ਮਰਦਮਸ਼ੁਮਾਰੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਆਬਾਦੀ 19,219 ਸੀ। ਕਸਬਾ ਸਰਹੱਦੀ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡਾਂ ਲਈ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਹੈ।
