Where is Akalgarh?

Akalgarh is a village of Kharar tehsil in SAS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Puadh region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Kurali, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Majri community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039018, and it covers 114 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 622 people in Akalgarh: 317 men and 305 women, living in 119 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 114 hectares, the population density works out to about 546 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 962 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 69, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 227 people, about 36 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 82.28 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.36 per cent and women at 76.26 per cent. The census recorded 173 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 141 main workers, the largest group, 51, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 46 cultivators on their own land and 34 agricultural labourers. A further 32 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Akalgarh's land. Of the village's 114 hectares, 103 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 60 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (60 hectares). About 11 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 51 cultivators and 43 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
