Where is Bachhwan?

Bachhwan is a village of Balachaur tehsil in SBS Nagar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Balachaur, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Balachaur community development block and is served by the Bachhuna gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032383, and it covers 172 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 523 people in Bachhwan: 255 men and 268 women, living in 104 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 172 hectares, the population density works out to about 304 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1051 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 81, about 15 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 437 people, about 84 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 79.41 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.05 per cent and women at 71.56 per cent. The census recorded 159 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 157 main workers, the largest group, 124, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 22 cultivators on their own land and 11 agricultural labourers. A further 2 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
