Where is Bagowal?

Bagowal is a village in Balachaur tehsil of SBS Nagar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Balachaur, about 16 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Balachaur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032423, and it covers 466 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,719 people in Bagowal: 917 men and 802 women, living in 355 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 466 hectares, the population density works out to about 369 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 875 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 177, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 732 people, about 43 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.59 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 90.4 per cent and women at 60.78 per cent. The census recorded 858 workers, about 50 per cent of the village. Of the 658 main workers, the largest group, 245, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 144 agricultural labourers and 140 household industry workers. A further 200 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Bagowal's land. Of the village's 466 hectares, 112 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (12 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (100 hectares). About 33 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. The census recorded 145 cultivators and 186 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, one government middle school, one government secondary school and one government senior secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 12. The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

Balachaur, the tehsil headquarters, and Nawanshahr, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Sabhuwal, Golu Majra, Kathgarh and Tundewal.
