Bangla Sahib Row: AAP vs Delhi Police, DSGMC Over Protesters

A political row has erupted around Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi after police moved in to detain protesters who had taken shelter at the shrine during Saturday's lockdown over the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) march against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders say police entered the gurdwara in shoes and without covering their heads. Delhi Police call that video misleading, and the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has backed the police and accused AAP of politics.

What happened at Bangla Sahib?

Restrictions were announced across Delhi on Friday, and hundreds of students and youth activists, including about 200 from Punjab according to The Tribune, took shelter at the gurdwara overnight, as young protesters had done there in July. On Saturday, groups repeatedly stepped out to join the march towards Jantar Mantar and retreated inside when police approached. Around 1 pm, police detained protesters who had gathered at the entrance, according to ThePrint, and others were picked up from the gurdwara premises.

What does AAP allege?

AAP leaders Saurabh Bhardwaj and Jarnail Singh questioned the police presence inside the shrine. In Chandigarh, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and ministers Harpal Singh Cheema and Baljit Kaur alleged that police entered bareheaded, wearing shoes and carrying batons. Cheema compared the episode to 1984. These are AAP's allegations.

What do Delhi Police and the DSGMC say?

Delhi Police said the personnel in the video were walking along a common passage that all devotees use to reach the point where footwear is removed. It said the clip was circulated with "malicious intent" to outrage a religious community and that legal action is being initiated. DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka said protesters had forced their way in despite being stopped by staff, camped in the complex and displayed political placards, and accused AAP of "dragging the gurdwara into the controversy". He said people are welcome for langar and shelter but the gurdwara will not become a political arena.

Are the accounts consistent?

Not entirely. The Hindu, citing those familiar with the exchanges, reported that gurdwara representatives refused a police request to bar protesters, saying they were unarmed and not raising slogans inside, while some visitors called the sight of police with lathis near the shrine shameful. Kalka's version is that slogans were raised and that his committee allowed police entry only to remove political protesters.

What do Punjab student groups say?

Student and youth bodies from Punjab, including the Punjab Students Union, Naujawan Bharat Sabha and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Youth Federation, claimed that more than 50 youths from the state, including 15 to 20 women, were detained. PSU state president Ranbir Singh Randhawa alleged a lathicharge. Videos shared by detainees purportedly showed torn shirts and displaced turbans; Jugti could not independently verify them, and police have not responded to the lathicharge claim in the reports reviewed.

Why does it matter?

Gurdwaras are open refuges for all, but also places where Sikh etiquette on footwear and head covering is strict, so any perceived breach quickly becomes a religious and political flashpoint. The row comes as CJP has called a fresh march for Sunday after Saturday's crackdown.
