Rajbir Singh Ghuman, Officer on Special Duty to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, was questioned by the CBI for nearly six hours on Friday, October 16, in the alleged corruption and influence-peddling case linked to the Chief Minister's Office. He has been called again on Monday, according to Hindustan Times and Punjabi Tribune.
How long was Ghuman questioned?
Ghuman reached the CBI's Sector 30 office in Chandigarh in the afternoon, between 2.30 pm and 3 pm by different reports, accompanied by his lawyer GPS Ghuman. Hindustan Times says he remained inside until about 8.30 pm; Punjabi Tribune puts his exit at around 8.45 pm. It was his first appearance since the FIR was registered on October 5.
What did Ghuman say afterwards?
His lawyer said he was cooperating with the probe in line with the Supreme Court's directions. Punjabi media reports, including Daily Post, say the agency put around 40 questions to him and that he answered them. Babushahi reports that he alleged a political motive, and Dailyhunt quotes him as saying he expects a clean chit soon.
Why did he appear now?
Ghuman had skipped CBI notices issued between October 7 and 9. On October 12 the Supreme Court declined to stay the FIR but directed the agency not to take coercive action against him and asked him to cooperate. The CBI then sent a fresh notice on Thursday, The Times of India and Dailyhunt report.
What else is happening in the case?
The CBI registered the FIR on October 5 on the High Court's direction against Ghuman and five others: Nitin Gohal, Jitin Gohal, Romi Mahajan, Bir Devinder and RS Nagra. Hindustan Times reports the agency also summoned the other five on Friday and has sought records on postings, transfers and projects from state departments. The Enforcement Directorate registered its own case in Jalandhar a day after the Supreme Court order, adding a money-laundering angle, according to The Times of India. These are allegations; no court has found anyone guilty.
When must Ghuman appear next?
He has been summoned again on Monday, October 19, at 2 pm, according to Daily Post.
Is Ghuman under arrest?
No. The Supreme Court has barred coercive action against him for now, and he left the CBI office after questioning.
