Newly appointed Punjab Congress president Pargat Singh has launched his sharpest attack yet on the Aam Aadmi Party government, calling the suspension of AAP MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana a “dictatorship” and accusing the ruling party of punishing its own legislator for speaking about ground realities in the state.

Speaking to news agency ANI on Sunday, Pargat Singh said, “I call this a dictatorship; it is not a true democracy. Kejriwal is essentially a dictator because he refuses to agree with anyone who speaks about the ground reality.” He alleged that the AAP government’s claims of honesty, patriotism and revolutions in education and healthcare were “a facade.”

“The fact is, it is all a facade, a facade of honesty, a facade of patriotism, and a facade of having brought about revolutions in education and healthcare,” he told ANI.

Why was Maiserkhana suspended?

AAP suspended Maiserkhana from its primary membership citing “anti-party activities and indiscipline.” The MLA had released a video publicly raising concerns about teacher vacancies and other basic issues in schools in his constituency, saying he had repeatedly urged the government to fill the vacant posts so that students could study properly.

“I am not fighting against schools; I am fighting for them. It is not just my children studying there; children from all over. Children of other people study in these schools,” Maiserkhana said in the video. “I know what the situation is like in these schools; I could not tolerate it anymore. If I am wrong, I apologise.”

Law-and-order broadside at the Mann government

Pargat Singh also turned his fire on the state’s law-and-order situation. “The real issue is a lack of leadership; there is no leadership within the police force, nor is there any political leadership. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann cannot shirk his responsibility,” he said.

He claimed two murders had taken place “just yesterday” and said he did not think Punjab had ever faced such conditions before, promising “professionalism in the police force” when the Congress returns to power. CNN-News18 reported him alleging a leadership vacuum in the state — “neither political leadership nor police leadership.”

2027 battle lines

The remarks are Pargat Singh’s opening offensive as PPCC chief — he replaced Amarinder Singh Raja Warring earlier this week ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, has backed the new state leadership, saying the party is united and would contest the 2027 elections together, and that the people would respond to the AAP government’s policies in the coming elections.
