Auckland, Tāmaki Makaurau in Māori, is New Zealand's largest city, a harbour city on an isthmus in the North Island with 1,656,486 people in the Auckland Region in the 2023 census. It is the centre of Punjabi New Zealand: 27,306 people in the region spoke Panjabi in 2023, more than half of the national total, and its South Auckland suburbs hold the largest Sikh community in the country, anchored by the biggest gurdwara in New Zealand at Takanini.
Where is Auckland, and why do Punjabis live there?
Auckland occupies a narrow isthmus between two harbours on two seas: the Waitematā Harbour on the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Manukau Harbour on the Tasman Sea to the south west, with the Hauraki Gulf and its islands beyond. The landscape is dotted with the volcanic cones of the Auckland Volcanic Field, and the Sky Tower marks the central city. William Hobson, the first governor, founded Auckland on 18 September 1840 and made it the colony's capital, a status it held until Wellington took over in 1865. It has been the nation's largest city through most of its history, and its airport and port make it New Zealand's gateway. When immigration policy opened to Asia from 1986, Auckland was where new arrivals landed, and it is now one of the world's most diverse cities: 43 per cent of its residents were born overseas, and people of Asian ethnicities made up 31.3 per cent of the region in 2023.
Punjabis live in Auckland for the same reasons they live in the other cities of this series: work, study, business and family, in the country's biggest job market, with a community large enough to support temples, schools and shops. Auckland opens this series' map of Punjabi places in New Zealand. The community's roots are older than the modern migration: Sikh numbers in New Zealand were very small before the immigration policy changes of the 1980s, the New Zealand Sikh Society was established in 1964, and the country's first gurdwara opened in Hamilton in 1997, with seven more then set up in the Auckland area as the city's community outgrew every other centre.
What do the numbers say?
The Auckland Region counted 1,656,486 people in the 2023 census, with a median age of 35.9. Panjabi was spoken by 27,306 people in the region, 1.6 per cent of Aucklanders, out of 49,656 speakers in New Zealand as a whole: more than half of the country's Panjabi speakers live in this one region. The Indian ethnic group, the wider community most Punjabi Aucklanders are counted in, numbered 175,794 people in the region, 10.6 per cent of Auckland, out of 292,092 nationally, making Indians one of the city's largest ethnic groups.
For religion, the Stats NZ place summary for Auckland does not publish a separate Sikh total, folding the faith into a broader category, so no Auckland Sikh figure is invented here. Nationally, Te Ara, the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, puts the 2023 census count at around 53,000 Sikhs, 1.1 per cent of the population, a share it notes only Canada and India exceed. The growth is recent and steep: around 2,000 Sikhs in 1990, 9,500 in 2006, 19,000 in 2013 and around 53,000 in 2023, with Auckland taking the largest share of that growth.
South Auckland: Papakura, Takanini and Papatoetoe
Punjabi Auckland is centred on the south. Through Papatoetoe, Manurewa, Takanini and Papakura, and east toward Flat Bush and Dannemora, Sikh families settled near the temples, the motorway south and the newer housing of the city's growth edge. The geography shows in the community's institutions: its largest gurdwara is at Takanini, its games are played at Papakura, and temple after temple lines the southern suburbs. When New Zealand held its first Sikh Games at Bruce Pulman Park in Papakura in 2019, more than 20,000 people attended across two days, with over 500 athletes competing in sports from football and hockey to kabaddi, gatka, bhangra and gidda, an Auckland Council report on the event noting the importance of the Sikh community in Papakura and Takanini.
Gurdwaras, schools and the Supreme Sikh Society
The Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand runs the Gurdwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib at Takanini, which it describes as New Zealand's largest gurdwara, set on more than ten acres with a library, childcare, a vegetable garden and seven international sports fields in its Sikh Sports Complex, alongside the Sikh Heritage School. The same society runs the Gurdwara Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji at Ōtāhuhu, one of the community's older temples. In Papatoetoe, the Gurdwara Sri Dasmesh Darbar, run by the Auckland Sikh Society, holds langar for all and runs a Punjabi school teaching the lives of the ten Gurus, Sikh history and Punjabi culture, with the Punjabi Cultural Association contributing to the national Indian community body. Papakura has the Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib on Broadway, a newer temple offering daily prayers, kirtan and langar seva to the fast growing suburbs around it. Te Ara counts seven gurdwaras set up in the Auckland area after the first Hamilton temple, and more have followed, from the North Shore to Bombay, so that almost every part of the region now has a temple within reach.
Auckland is New Zealand's gateway and largest city, and for Punjabis it is the country's capital in everything but name: over half its Panjabi speakers, its biggest gurdwara, and a South Auckland heartland built temple by temple since the 1990s. For the full map, see Punjabi places in New Zealand.
