Bergamo is a city of 120,629 people in Lombardy in northern Italy, about 40 kilometres northeast of Milan, split between its walled medieval Città Alta on the hills and the modern Città Bassa on the plain below. For Punjabis, Bergamo city is the capital of a province that scholars use as a case study of Sikh settlement in Italy: the farm and factory towns of the Bergamo plain hold four gurdwaras, and Punjabi Sikhs have worked Lombardy's dairy farms and fields, in the province as across the region, since the 1990s.

Where is Bergamo, and why do Punjabis live there?

Bergamo stands where the plain meets the Bergamo Alps, which begin immediately north of the city. It was the Roman town of Bergomum, a municipality by 49 BCE, later the seat of a Lombard duchy and an independent commune, and it was ceded to Venice in 1428, whose rule left the massive defensive walls around the Città Alta that became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. Giuseppe Garibaldi took the city in 1859, and the volunteers from Bergamo who marched with him gave it its nickname, Città dei Mille, the City of the Thousand. Today it is the fourth largest city in Lombardy, the second most visited in the region after Milan, and served by Il Caravaggio International Airport, the third busiest in Italy. Bergamo and Brescia were jointly Italian Capital of Culture for 2023.

Punjabis live in Bergamo province because Lombardy is Italy's industrial and dairy heartland, and both needed workers. The pattern is the Po Valley pattern described for Reggio Emilia: from the 1990s, Indian workers, most of them Sikhs from Punjab, came to dominate the labour force of the Italian dairy industry, taking the early work with the cows as bergamini on farms whose climate and rhythms resembled Punjab's, some moving on to better paid cheesemaking, while others found factory and food industry work in the plain towns southeast of the city. The community is a province community more than a city one: its temples stand in Cortenuova, Covo, Luzzana and Gorlago, market and farm towns on the plain, and Bergamo city is its capital, market and name. Bergamo continues this series' map of Punjabi places in Italy.

What do the numbers say?

Italy keeps no census of religion or ethnicity, so every figure for Sikhs in Italy is an estimate, and this page treats them that way. Nationally, Sikhs in Italy are estimated at about 220,000 in 2023, the second largest Sikh population in Europe after the United Kingdom. No sourced Sikh total for Bergamo province is published, so none is stated here. The official city figures show why the province story must not be forced onto the city: immigrants made up 19.2 per cent of Bergamo city's population in 2025, but people born in India numbered 453 in the city itself, a small city community. The province's significance is documented differently: in a 2021 study in the journal Educational Reflective Practices, sociologists Samuele Davide Molli and Maurizio Ambrosini chose the Sikhs of Bergamo province as one of their two case studies of immigrant religious life in Lombardy, examining the community's territorial rooting and economic participation, and concluding that its religious communities are a resource for integration, for the immigrants and for the receiving society alike.

Dairy land, factories and the plain towns

Bergamo province runs from the Alps through the city to a flat southern plain of dairy farms, corn and soya fields and small factories, and it is on that plain, the Bassa Bergamasca, that the Punjabi story sits. The work mirrors the wider Lombardy pattern: cattle sheds at dawn, cheese production, field crops, and jobs in the food processing and manufacturing plants of the plain towns. Family reunification turned a workforce into a settled community, with children in the plain towns' schools and the gurdwara as the institution that holds the week together: prayer and langar on Sundays, help with paperwork and work problems, and a hall for the festivals of the Punjabi year.

Gurdwaras in Bergamo province

The national gurdwara list records four temples in Bergamo province, each in a plain town rather than in the city itself. Gurudwara Singh Sabha stands at Cortenuova, the province's best known Sikh temple, serving the farm and factory families of the southeastern plain. Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur stands at Covo, Gurudwara Shri Guru Nanak Niwas at Luzzana in the hills' foothills north of the city, and Shri Guru Ravidass Dham at Gorlago serves the Ravidassia community, a reminder that Punjabi Bergamo is not one congregation but several, Sikh and Ravidassia, spread across the plain towns in the pattern seen across northern Italy.

Bergamo is the City of the Thousand, a UNESCO walled hill town above a modern Lombard city, and for Punjabis the capital of a dairy and factory province where four gurdwaras anchor one of Italy's most studied Sikh communities. For the full map, see Punjabi places in Italy.
