Fauja Singh (reported born 1 April 1911, died 14 July 2025) was a Sikh marathon runner from Beas Pind village near Jalandhar, Punjab, nicknamed the "Turbaned Tornado". He took up running in his late 80s, ran nine full marathons between 2000 and 2013, and was widely reported as the first centenarian to finish one.
Early life
Fauja Singh was born in Beas Pind, near Jalandhar, the youngest of four children in a farming family. As a child his legs were thin and weak, and he did not walk until he was about five, which earned him the nickname "danda", or stick. Because birth certificates were not usually issued in Punjab villages at the time, his date of birth rests on his own account and on his British passport, which gave 1 April 1911.
He lost his wife in 1992 and, in 1994, his son Kuldip in a construction accident. From the 1990s he lived in Ilford, east London, with one of his sons.
Marathon career
In 1995, grieving, he returned to the running he had enjoyed as a young man. He ran his first London Marathon in 2000 at the claimed age of 89, finishing in 6 hours 54 minutes. His best time, 5 hours 40 minutes, came at the 2003 Toronto Waterfront Marathon, and in 2004 he appeared in an Adidas campaign alongside David Beckham and Muhammad Ali.
On 16 October 2011, back in Toronto, he was reported to have become the first 100-year-old to finish a marathon, in 8 hours 11 minutes. He carried the Olympic torch in London in 2012 and retired from competitive running after a 10 km race at the Hong Kong Marathon in February 2013. Guinness World Records never recognised his age records, because no birth certificate could confirm his age.
Honours and charity
Fauja Singh received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2003 and the British Empire Medal in the 2015 New Year Honours for services to sport and charity. He raised money for charities through his running club, Sikhs in the City, and a biography, Turbaned Tornado, was launched in the House of Lords in 2011. A vegetarian, he credited a simple diet of phulka, dal, vegetables, yogurt and milk.
Death and legacy
Fauja Singh died on 14 July 2025, aged 114 by the reported count, after a vehicle hit him as he crossed the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway near his native village. Police arrested a driver within days. He was cremated with state honours at Beas Pind on 20 July 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him an exceptional athlete, and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said a statue would be installed at the sports college in Jalandhar.
