Misbah-ul-Haq: captain, records and life

Misbah-ul-Haq is a former Pakistani international cricketer from Mianwali in Punjab, Pakistan, who captained Pakistan in all three formats and became the country's most successful Test captain. A calm middle order batsman, he scored 5,222 Test runs, led Pakistan to the number one Test ranking in 2016, and later served as head coach and chief selector.

Early life and education in Mianwali

Misbah-ul-Haq Khan Niazi was born on 28 May 1974 in Mianwali, a city in northwestern Punjab, Pakistan, east of the Indus River. Both of his parents, Abdul Qudoos Khan Niazi and Balqees Khan Niazi, were school principals. His father died while Misbah was in college, and his mother raised the family from there. He has two elder sisters. The former Pakistan captain and prime minister Imran Khan is a distant cousin.

Cricket began for him as tape ball games in his home town, but his parents put education first. He completed a BSc in mathematics and physics at Government College University Faisalabad, then studied at the University of Management and Technology in Lahore, completing an MBA in human resource management in 2012. His first class debut came late by the standards of his time: in 1998, aged 24, for Sargodha. That slow start shaped the whole career. Misbah arrived in international cricket with a degree, a trade behind him in domestic cricket, and no time to waste.

Debut, the wilderness years and the 2007 breakthrough

Pakistan gave him a Test debut on 8 March 2001 against New Zealand at Auckland, and a one day international debut on 27 April 2002 against the same opponents. The place did not stick. For several years he moved in and out of the side, played little international cricket between 2003 and 2007, and built his case instead in domestic cricket for Faisalabad and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines.

The breakthrough came at the first ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007, where he made his T20 international debut against Bangladesh on 2 September. Misbah finished as Pakistan's leading run scorer in the tournament and took the final against India down to the last over, before his paddle scoop in that final over ended the chase and Pakistan lost by five runs. He was the first Pakistani to reach number one in the T20 international batting rankings and the first to score a T20 international fifty for Pakistan. Two years later he was a member of the Pakistan squad that won the 2009 World Twenty20 in England, and on the tour of India in late 2007 he scored 464 runs in three Tests, including an unbeaten 161 at Bengaluru, his highest Test score.

What is Misbah-ul-Haq best known for?

Misbah-ul-Haq is best known for captaining Pakistan through its hardest modern period and turning the Test side into the world number one team. Appointed Test captain in October 2010, after the spot fixing scandal on the England tour had left the team without its captain, he led Pakistan in 56 Tests and won 26 of them, more than any Pakistan captain before or since. With the bat he was the steady middle order presence of that side: 5,222 runs in 75 Tests at an average of 46.62, with 10 centuries and 39 half centuries.

His one day record carries one of cricket's strangest marks. In 162 one day internationals he scored 5,122 runs at 43.40, with 42 half centuries and a top score of 96 not out, but never a century. Those 5,122 runs remain the most scored by any batsman in one day internationals without a hundred. In 39 T20 internationals he scored 788 runs. The numbers describe the player: not the fastest starter, rarely the headline act, but the man still batting when the match was decided.

Captaincy and the road to number one

Misbah took over the Test captaincy in October 2010, at the age of 36, when Pakistan cricket was at a low point. In May 2011 he also replaced Shahid Afridi as one day captain, and he led the T20 side as well before stepping down from that role in May 2012. The Pakistan Cricket Board's own account credits his calm, level headed approach with steadying a team playing its home cricket in exile in the United Arab Emirates, and the results followed. Pakistan won four Test series in a row from September 2011 to January 2012, ending with a 3-0 clean sweep of England, then the top ranked Test side.

As captain he also led Pakistan to the 2012 Asia Cup title in Bangladesh, the country's second Asia Cup win, and in 2013 to a one day series win in South Africa, the first by an Asian side there. His own batting peaked in the same years: in 2013 he was the leading run scorer in one day internationals worldwide, with 1,373 runs and 15 half centuries, a record for a calendar year. In Abu Dhabi in 2014 he scored the fastest fifty in Test cricket, off 21 balls, and a century off 56 balls against Australia, equalling the fastest Test hundred record of that time, held by Viv Richards.

The summit came in England in 2016. On his first Test tour there as captain, Misbah scored a century at Lord's at the age of 42, becoming the oldest captain to score a Test century, and marked it with a salute and ten push ups, a tribute to the army training camp the squad had attended at Abbottabad. Pakistan drew the series 2-2, and in August 2016 they reached number one in the ICC Test rankings for the first time since 1988. Misbah became the first Pakistan captain to hold the ICC Test Championship mace.

Retirement, records and franchise cricket

Misbah retired from one day and T20 internationals after leading Pakistan to the quarter finals of the 2015 World Cup, where he was the team's leading run scorer. His last one day international was against Australia on 20 March 2015. He played on in Tests for two more years, then announced in April 2017 that the West Indies tour would be his last. Pakistan won that series 2-1, becoming the first Pakistan side to win a Test series in the Caribbean, and Misbah retired from all international cricket on 14 May 2017, days before his 43rd birthday.

In franchise cricket he captained Islamabad United to the first Pakistan Super League title in 2016, and he was captain of the side again when United won their second title in 2018. His domestic leadership record was just as strong: in the 2012-13 season he captained Faisalabad Wolves and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines to wins across all three domestic formats, in Twenty20, first class and List A cricket, in a single season.

Honours, coaching and later life

The Government of Pakistan awarded Misbah the Pride of Performance on 23 March 2014 and the Sitara-i-Imtiaz on 23 March 2018. He received the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award in 2016, was named one of Wisden's Cricketers of the Year in 2017, and in the same year received the PCB's Imtiaz Ahmed Spirit of Cricket Award and its Lifetime Achievement Award.

On 4 September 2019 the PCB appointed him head coach of the national team and chief selector on a three year contract, the first person to hold both jobs at the same time in Pakistan cricket. He resigned as chief selector in October 2020 to concentrate on coaching, led Pakistan to a first Test series win over South Africa since 2003, and resigned as head coach on 6 September 2021. He later coached Muzaffarabad Tigers in the Kashmir Premier League and, as of 2024, sat on the PCB's cricket technical committee. Away from cricket he is a director of the Pakistan Children's Heart Foundation, which funds operations for children born with heart defects.

Legacy of a late bloomer

Misbah-ul-Haq's legacy rests on timing and temperament. He was a late bloomer who did not hold a regular international place until he was 33, then captained his country for seven years, longer in the Test job than any Pakistan captain of his era. He took over a side damaged by scandal and playing away from home, and left it as the number one Test team in the world, with a record 26 Test wins as captain. For readers in Punjab his story also starts at home: a school principal's son from Mianwali, educated in Faisalabad and Lahore, who showed that a cricketer from a smaller city, with a degree in his pocket and patience at the crease, could lead Pakistan at the highest level.
