Sardool Sikander: Punjabi Folk Singer

Sardool Sikander (15 January 1961 to 24 February 2021) was a Punjabi folk and pop singer from Kheri Naudh Singh village in Fatehgarh Sahib district, trained in the Patiala gharana. The son of the tabla player Sagar Mastana, he rose from radio and television appearances in the early 1980s to become one of the best loved Punjabi voices of his generation, recording 27 albums, singing for films and performing duets with his wife, the singer and actress Amar Noorie, before his death from Covid-19 at the age of 60.

Early life in Kheri Naudh Singh

Sardool Sikander was born on 15 January 1961 at Kheri Naudh Singh, a village in what is now Fatehgarh Sahib district in the Malwa region of Punjab. Music was in the house: his father, Sagar Mastana, was a noted tabla player who devised a special tabla played with a thin bamboo stick. The boy trained in music under Professor B. S. Narang and was formed by the Patiala gharana, the classical school whose discipline stayed under his folk singing for the rest of his career, giving his voice its grounding in sur even at the height of the pop years.

How did Sardool Sikander become famous?

He became famous first on radio and television in the early 1980s, arriving with the album Roadways Di Laari, and then across the Punjabi world with Husna De Malko. Released in 1991, Husna De Malko is reported to have sold more than five million copies worldwide, a figure few Punjabi albums of the cassette age could touch, and it fixed his name with a generation. The songs listeners still name first are Ek Charkha Gali De Vich Da Laya and Sanu Ishq Brandy Char Gayi, folk rooted numbers carried by a trained voice that could hold a mela crowd and a recording studio with the same ease.

Across four decades he released 27 albums, among them Gora Rang Deyin Na Rabba, Zara Has Ke Vikha, Ik Kuri Dil Mangdi, Nakhra Janab Da, O Ho! and Haiya Ho, and his recordings travelled far beyond Punjab in dozens of compilation albums issued around the world. He was a singer of the cassette and CD era at its peak, when a Punjabi album could sell in the millions from Ludhiana to Toronto, and his voice was one of the sounds that defined it.

Albums, films and duets

Sardool also worked in films. He acted in Punjabi films including Jagga Daku, in which he played a police inspector, and Police in Pollywood (2014), and sang playback for Hindi films including Pyaasa (2002) and The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (2003). Alongside the folk and pop work he recorded devotional music throughout his career, including the albums Panth Sajaya Hai and Khalsa Dee Chardi Kala and the duet Bole So Nihaal (2006) with Hans Raj Hans.

He was married to Amar Noorie, herself a well known Punjabi singer and actress, and the two performed and recorded together for decades, including the duet album Ik Tu Hove Ik Main Hovan. Their stage partnership was part of his public identity: a husband and wife team from the heart of Malwa, singing the repertoire they had both grown up with. His final released recording, the single Maula with the Canadian Punjabi artist The PropheC, appeared in 2021, the year of his death.

Later years and death

His later years were marked by serious illness. He had undergone a renal transplant in 2016 and a coronary angioplasty in 2003, and he lived with diabetes. On 19 January 2021 he was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Mohali in a serious condition with low oxygen levels, and was treated for Covid-19 alongside kidney damage and multi organ failure. He died there on 24 February 2021, aged 60, survived by Amar Noorie and their sons, Sarang and Alaap.

The Punjab cabinet formally condoled his death, and Chief Minister Amarinder Singh announced that the state government would clear his hospital dues of Rs 10 lakh after the family told ministers they could not pay them. Tributes came from across the Punjabi music world in India and abroad; in New York, a condolence meeting of diaspora artists and promoters remembered a lovable man whose rich, mellifluous voice had made him, in the words of promoter Balwinder Singh Bajwa, the heartthrob of Punjabis of all ages across the world.

Legacy

Sardool Sikander stands for a particular Punjabi sound: folk material, sung with classical training, delivered for the mass album market without losing the village in it. The Patiala gharana grounding set him apart from purely pop contemporaries, and the duets with Amar Noorie made the pair one of the enduring double acts of Punjabi music. His home village of Kheri Naudh Singh remains on the map of Punjabi music because of him, and songs such as Ek Charkha Gali De Vich Da Laya are still sung at melas and family gatherings more than three decades after they were recorded.

ਖੇੜੀ ਨੌਧ ਸਿੰਘ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤੀ ਜੀਵਨ

ਸਰਦੂਲ ਸਿਕੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ 15 ਜਨਵਰੀ 1961 ਨੂੰ ਖੇੜੀ ਨੌਧ ਸਿੰਘ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ, ਜੋ ਹੁਣ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਵਾ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਤਿਹਗੜ੍ਹ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦਾ ਪਿੰਡ ਹੈ। ਸੰਗੀਤ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਸੀ: ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਾਗਰ ਮਸਤਾਨਾ ਜਾਣੇ ਤਬਲਾ ਵਾਦਕ ਸਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਖਾਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਤਬਲਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਪਤਲੀ ਬਾਂਸ ਦੀ ਤੀਲੀ ਨਾਲ ਵਜਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਮੁੰਡੇ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਬੀ ਐੱਸ ਨਾਰੰਗ ਕੋਲ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਲਾਈ ਲਈ ਅਤੇ ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਘਰਾਣੇ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਘੜਿਆ। ਉਹ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰੀ ਸਕੂਲ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਲੋਕ ਗਾਇਕੀ ਦੇ ਥੱਲੇ ਰਿਹਾ, ਅਤੇ ਪੌਪ ਦੇ ਸਿਖਰ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਰ ਦੀ ਪਕੜ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ।

ਪਿਛਲੇ ਸਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਹਾਂਤ

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਸਾਲ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਰਹੇ। 2016 ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਗੁਰਦਾ ਟਰਾਂਸਪਲਾਂਟ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ 2003 ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਐਂਜੀਓਪਲਾਸਟੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ, ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਸ਼ੂਗਰ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਉਂਦੇ ਸਨ। 19 ਜਨਵਰੀ 2021 ਨੂੰ ਆਕਸੀਜਨ ਦਾ ਪੱਧਰ ਘੱਟ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੋਹਾਲੀ ਦੇ ਫੋਰਟਿਸ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਾਖਲ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ, ਅਤੇ ਕੋਵਿਡ-19 ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰਦੇ ਦੇ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਅੰਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਫੇਲ੍ਹ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਇਲਾਜ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ। 24 ਫਰਵਰੀ 2021 ਨੂੰ 60 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਥੇ ਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੇਹਾਂਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਅਮਰ ਨੂਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਸਾਰੰਗ ਅਤੇ ਅਲਾਪ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ।

ਪੰਜਾਬ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਮੰਡਲ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੇਹਾਂਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਰਸਮੀ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕੀਤਾ, ਅਤੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਅਮਰਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਐਲਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੇ ਮੰਤਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਦਾ ਬਿੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇ ਸਕਦੇ, ਤਾਂ ਸੂਬਾ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਦੇ 10 ਲੱਖ ਰੁਪਏ ਦੇ ਬਕਾਏ ਅਦਾ ਕਰੇਗੀ। ਭਾਰਤ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਰੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਂਜਲੀਆਂ ਆਈਆਂ; ਨਿਊਯਾਰਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਰਵਾਸੀ ਕਲਾਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਮੋਟਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਸਭਾ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕੀਤਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਭਰਪੂਰ, ਮਿੱਠੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ, ਪ੍ਰਮੋਟਰ ਬਲਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਜਵਾ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਭਰ ਦੇ ਹਰ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਚਹੇਤਾ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ।

ਸਰਦੂਲ ਸਿਕੰਦਰ ਇੱਕ ਖਾਸ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ: ਲੋਕ ਸਮੱਗਰੀ, ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰੀ ਸਿਖਲਾਈ ਨਾਲ ਗਾਈ ਹੋਈ, ਵੱਡੀ ਐਲਬਮ ਮਾਰਕੀਟ ਲਈ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ, ਪਰ ਪਿੰਡ ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕਦੇ ਨਾ ਗਿਆ। ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਘਰਾਣੇ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਹ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ ਪੌਪ ਸਮਕਾਲੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ, ਅਤੇ ਅਮਰ ਨੂਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੁਗਲਬੰਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਜੋੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਜੋੜੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਪਿੰਡ ਖੇੜੀ ਨੌਧ ਸਿੰਘ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਦੇ ਨਕਸ਼ੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਚਰਖਾ ਗਲੀ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਾਹ ਲਿਆ ਵਰਗੇ ਗੀਤ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਤਿੰਨ ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਸਮੇਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ ਮੇਲਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਸਮਾਗਮਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
