Sharry Mann: Yaar Anmulle and 3 Peg Singer

Sharry Mann is a Punjabi singer, songwriter and actor from Mohali, best known for Yaar Anmulle, the friendship song that spread online in 2011 and made him famous before radio and television caught up, and for 3 Peg, one of the biggest Punjabi party songs of its decade. Born Surinder Singh Mann, he left a civil engineering course behind, built his audience on the early internet, and later carried his easy, story-driven singing into films such as Marriage Palace.

Early life and the engineering he left behind

Surinder Singh Mann was born on 12 September 1982 in Mohali, in what is now SAS Nagar district, and grew up in the planned city beside Chandigarh. He went to school in Chandigarh and then began a civil engineering course at a college in Moga. Music, which he had loved since childhood, kept pulling harder than the classroom, and he eventually gave the course up to sing full time. It was a gamble with no label, no family name in the industry and no money behind it.

How did Sharry Mann become famous?

He became famous through the internet, at a moment when Punjabi music was just moving online. His song Yaar Anmulle, a fond look back at college friendships and the day they end, was released online and spread through YouTube and social media, reaching about 450,000 views within a month, a remarkable number for an unsigned singer at the time. The album of the same name followed on Speed Records with fourteen tracks, and the song won him the Best Male Debut honour at the PTC Punjabi Music Awards for 2010. Another early track, Kudiyan Te Bussan, had already leaked online and shown how hungry that new audience was.

What made Yaar Anmulle last is its subject. It is not a song about wealth or romance but about friends scattering after college, and a generation of Punjabi students adopted it as their own farewell anthem. It is still played at college farewells across Punjab and the diaspora, more than a decade later.

Albums: Aate Di Chiri to Meri Bebe

His second album, Aate Di Chiri, came in 2012 after a two year gap, again with music by Nick Dhammu. Where the first album spoke mainly to students, this one deliberately widened the circle, with songs about mothers, sisters, family and friendship alongside the lighter numbers, and it won Best Album of the Year honours. The same year he sang Pooja Kiven Aa for the hit film Jatt and Juliet, starring Diljit Dosanjh, and the song was named the most popular song in a Punjabi film. His third album, Meri Bebe, followed in 2015. Later album-length work includes Dilwale and The Last Good Album in 2023.

3 Peg and the singles years

From the middle of the 2010s, Mann's career ran on singles, and one of them dwarfed the rest. 3 Peg, written by Ravi Raj, composed by Mista Baaz and released in December 2016, became a fixture at weddings and parties, crossing 36 million YouTube views in under two months on its way to several hundred million. At the PTC Punjabi Music Awards 2017 it won both Most Popular Song of the Year and Best Bhangra Song of the Year. Around it came a run of well heard singles: Hostel, which returned to the college world of Yaar Anmulle and topped the UK Asian chart, Chandigarh Waliye, Carrom Board, Cute Munda, Motor and Saade Aala. Many of his best known videos from these years were made with the director Parmish Verma. In 2019 his video for Yaar Chadeya won Best Music Video at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards.

Acting career

Mann acted in films from 2013, the year he made his debut in Oye Hoye Pyar Ho Gaya, directed by Aditya Sood, and also appeared in Ishq Garaari, which did better at the box office. He made guest appearances in Nikka Zaildar and its sequel and in Super Singh. His clearest lead film role came in Marriage Palace in 2018, in which he played Nimma in a comedy built around the wedding halls of Punjab. Acting has remained the second strand of his career, taken up between albums and singles rather than instead of them.
