Early life

Diljit Dosanjh was born Diljit Singh on 6 January 1984 in the village of Dosanjh Kalan in the Phillaur tehsil of Jalandhar district, Punjab. His father, Balbir Singh, worked for Punjab Roadways, and his mother, Sukhwinder Kaur, was a homemaker. At the age of eleven he moved to Ludhiana to live with a maternal uncle, where he finished his schooling at Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School. As a schoolboy he began singing kirtan in local gurdwaras, an early stage that gave his voice its devotional ease before any thought of fame.

Music career

Dosanjh's recording career began with the album Ishq Da Uda Ada, released by Finetone Cassettes in 2002, whose title track became his first widely heard single. He followed it with albums including Smile (2005), Chocolate (2008) and The Next Level (2009), the last featuring a high-profile collaboration with Yo Yo Honey Singh. He works most often with White Hill Productions and Speed Records, and his catalog now spans more than a dozen studio albums.

What set him apart was reach: Punjabi songs that filled arenas far beyond Punjab. In April 2023 he became the first Indian artist to perform in Punjabi at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California, playing a full set in his turban and kurta before a global crowd. A year later he appeared on the cover of the first print edition of Billboard Canada. In 2024–25 he mounted the Dil-Luminati world tour, which sold out stadiums across North America, including British Columbia Place in Vancouver, confirming him as the biggest touring act Punjabi music has produced.

Film career

He stepped into cinema with a cameo in Mel Karade Rabba (2010) and took his first lead in The Lion of Punjab (2011). The 2012 romantic comedy Jatt & Juliet, opposite Neeru Bajwa, became a landmark hit, and its sequel, Punjab 1984 (2013), Sardaar Ji (2015), Ambarsariya (2016) and Super Singh (2017) kept him among the top box-office draws in Punjabi cinema.

In 2016 he made his Bollywood debut as the police officer Sartaj Singh in Abhishek Chaubey's Udta Punjab, a performance that won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He went on to star in Phillauri (2017), Soorma (2018) — as the hockey star Sandeep Singh — Good Newwz (2019), and Jatt & Juliet 3 (2024). In 2024 he played the slain singer Amar Singh Chamkila in Imtiaz Ali's biopic, a role that earned him wide critical praise.

Personal life

Dosanjh is famously private about his family life. His parents and siblings have stayed out of the public eye, and he rarely discusses them in interviews. He is known among collaborators for a disciplined routine — he has spoken about being teetotaler and vegetarian — and for philanthropy through his Saanjh Foundation, which supports underprivileged children and elderly people in Punjab.

Legacy

Few artists have carried Punjabi culture as far. Dosanjh turned the tumbi-driven sound of Punjab's villages into a global pop language, filled stadiums from Edmonton to London, and proved that a turbaned Punjabi singer could headline Coachella, Tonight Show stages and Bollywood's biggest releases without diluting his roots. For a generation of Punjabi youth, he is the definitive face of the diaspora's confidence.
