Lilly Singh (born 26 September 1988) is a Canadian comedian, YouTuber, author, actor and television host whose parents are Punjabi Sikh immigrants from Hoshiarpur, Punjab. She built a global audience on YouTube as "Superwoman", then became the first person of Indian descent to host an American late-night talk show.
Early life
Singh was born and raised in the Scarborough district of Toronto, Ontario. Her parents are Indian Punjabi immigrants from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, and raised her as a Sikh. Variety India also traces her ancestry to Hoshiarpur, and she visits Mumbai once a year.
She attended Mary Shadd Public School and Lester B. Pearson Collegiate Institute, and graduated from York University in Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 2010. She had planned to go to graduate school before YouTube took over.
Career
In October 2010 she started a YouTube channel under the name IISuperwomanII, mixing sketch comedy with characters inspired by her Punjabi family. She later moved to Los Angeles, and in 2016 Forbes ranked her third among the world's highest-paid YouTubers. Her 2016 documentary A Trip to Unicorn Island followed her world tour, and her first book, How to Be a Bawse (2017), reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list.
In July 2017 she was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, announced at an event in New Delhi where she met young people supported by the agency's Youth4Change programme. In 2018 she launched her production company, Unicorn Island Productions.
From September 2019 to June 2021 she hosted the NBC talk show A Little Late with Lilly Singh, making her the first person of Indian descent to host an American late-night talk show. She has since voiced Tiffany Fluffit in DreamWorks' The Bad Guys films, written the book Be a Triangle (2022), and runs a non-profit, the Unicorn Island Fund, which continues her GirlLove campaign for girls.
In October 2025 York University gave her an honorary doctor of laws degree for her contributions to community building and pop culture.
