Sunny Deol: Sahnewal-Born Action Star, Ex-MP

Sunny Deol (born Ajay Singh Deol, 19 October 1957) is an Indian actor, filmmaker and former Member of Parliament from Punjab, born in Sahnewal in Ludhiana district. The elder son of Dharmendra, he is Hindi cinema's best-known action hero, famed for Ghayal, Damini, Border and Gadar, and in 2026 returned to the top with Border 2.

Early life

Ajay Singh Deol was born on 19 October 1957 in Sahnewal, Punjab, to the actor Dharmendra and his first wife, Prakash Kaur, in a Punjabi Jat family. Britannica gives his birthplace as Ludhiana, the district Sahnewal belongs to. His father was born in Nasrali village, from a Deol family of Dangon, and grew up in Sahnewal. Sunny grew up in Mumbai, where he went to Sacred Heart Boys High School and then R. A. Podar College, before studying theatre at the Old Rep Theatre in Birmingham, England. His brother is the actor Bobby Deol; his half-sisters are Esha and Ahana Deol.

Career

He made his debut in Betaab (1983), opposite Amrita Singh, a hit that made him a star, and followed it with Sohni Mahiwal (1984), a retelling of the Punjabi folk romance. Through the late 1980s he settled into action roles in Arjun, Dacait and Tridev.

Ghayal (1990) was the turning point. As a boxer accused of murder he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor, and for Damini (1993) he took the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. Its courtroom line about the "dhai kilo ka haath" is still quoted today. He added Darr (1993), Ghatak (1996) and Border (1997), in which he played a soldier at Longewala.

Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) made him a box-office giant, and for years he worked more sparingly, appearing with his father and brother in Apne (2007) and Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011). Then Gadar 2 (11 August 2023) was reported to earn about ₹691 crore worldwide and became his biggest film. Jaat followed in April 2025.

Border 2 opened on 23 January 2026 on the Republic Day weekend, with Deol as Lt Col Fateh Singh Kaler alongside Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty. Trackers' worldwide totals ranged from roughly ₹422 crore to ₹482 crore, second only to Gadar 2 among his films. Ikka, his first Netflix original, arrived on 10 July 2026.

Politics

Deol joined the BJP on 23 April 2019 and won the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat in Punjab that May, defeating the Congress's Sunil Jakhar. His term ended on 4 June 2024. His time in office drew sharp criticism: the Tribune ran a report card headlined "scores zilch", and the Indian Express put his attendance at about 17 per cent and said he had not visited Gurdaspur since September 2020. In August 2023 he said he did not want to contest again, and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa of the Congress won the seat in 2024.

Personal life

He has two sons, Karan and Rajveer, who are both actors. His father Dharmendra died on 24 November 2025, and Sunny was seen publicly with his sisters Esha and Ahana at a Border 2 screening in January 2026.
