Dharmendra: Punjab-Born Bollywood He-Man

Dharmendra (8 December 1935 – 24 November 2025) was one of Hindi cinema's biggest stars, a Punjab-born actor known as the "He-Man" of Bollywood. Born in Nasrali village and raised in Sahnewal, in Ludhiana district, he acted in more than 300 films over six decades, from Bandini and Satyakam to Sholay.

Early life

Dharmendra was born in Nasrali, a village in Ludhiana district, into a Punjabi Jat family. He was named Dharam Singh Deol; his father, Kewal Krishan (Kishan Singh) Deol, was a government schoolteacher and headmaster, and his mother was Satwant Kaur. His ancestral village is Dangon, also in Ludhiana district.

The family moved when his father was posted to Lalton and then Sahnewal, and Dharmendra grew up in Sahnewal, which people there still call home to him. He studied at the government school in Lalton Kalan and at Ramgarhia College in Phagwara, finishing in 1952. Accounts differ slightly on the birthplace, and some reports name Sahnewal itself.

In the late 1950s he took part in a talent hunt run by Filmfare magazine and, in 1958, took a train from Sahnewal to Bombay to try his luck in films.

Career

Dharmendra made his debut in 1960 in Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. He found early success in Bandini (1963) and Ayee Milan Ki Bela (1964), and led the war film Haqeeqat (1964). With Phool Aur Patthar (1966) he became a leading man, and he followed it with Anupama, Satyakam, Shikar and Ankhen.

The 1970s were his peak. Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971), Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973) and Chupke Chupke (1975) showed his range, and in Sholay (1975) he played Veeru, one of Hindi cinema's best-loved roles. He starred in more than 300 films and is remembered as a romantic hero, an action star and a gifted comic actor.

From the late 1990s he moved into character parts in films such as Life in a... Metro, Apne, Yamla Pagla Deewana and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023). He received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 and the Padma Bhushan in 2012, and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bikaner as a BJP candidate, serving from 2004 to 2009.

Personal life

Dharmendra married Prakash Kaur in 1954, and they have two sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, both actors, and two daughters. In 1980 he married the actress Hema Malini, and they have two daughters, Esha and Ahana Deol. His younger brother Ajit Deol and cousin Veerendra also worked in Punjabi and Hindi cinema.

Legacy

Dharmendra died at his home in Mumbai on 24 November 2025, aged 89, after a period of illness. Tributes came from across the film industry and from political leaders in Punjab, and Dangon and Sahnewal, the two Ludhiana villages linked to his life, observed his passing as the loss of a local son. He was posthumously conferred the Padma Vibhushan at the Padma Awards 2026. Reports say he kept his Punjab roots close to his heart even as a superstar.
