Early life in Nasrali, Sahnewal and Dangon

Dharmendra was born on 8 December 1935 in Nasrali, a village in Ludhiana district, Punjab. The Hindu's obituary describes Nasrali as his maternal village. He was born into a Punjabi Jat family: his father, Kewal Kishan Singh Deol, was a government schoolteacher and headmaster, and his mother was Satwant Kaur. His ancestral village is Dangon, also in Ludhiana district. The family moved with his father's postings, and Dharmendra grew up mainly in Sahnewal, studying at the government school in Lalton Kalan and finishing his schooling in Phagwara in 1952. Sahnewal still claims him as its own, and he spoke in later life about working in the fields and as a tubewell operator before films.

The full form of his birth name is recorded differently in different sources, as Dharam Singh Deol, Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol and Dharmendra Singh Deol. What is not in dispute is the shape of the story: a school headmaster's son from small town Punjab who watched films, dreamed of acting, and in the late 1950s entered the talent hunt run by Filmfare magazine. That contest brought him to Bombay, and after a difficult start he made his debut in 1960.

How did Dharmendra become a film star?

Dharmendra became a film star step by step, not overnight. His debut, Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere in 1960, went largely unnoticed. He was noticed in a small but crucial role as a prison doctor in Bimal Roy's Bandini in 1963, had his first commercial successes in films such as Shola Aur Shabnam and Anpadh, and played the lead in Chetan Anand's war film Haqeeqat in 1964. The turning point was Phool Aur Patthar in 1966, the year's top earning film, which made him a saleable leading man. In the same period Anupama earned him a souvenir at the National Film Awards, and Satyakam in 1969, in which he played an unflinching idealist, is still widely regarded as his finest acting performance.

Career peak: action, romance and comedy

From the late 1960s into the 1980s, Dharmendra was one of Hindi cinema's most reliable stars, and unusually he held three images at once. As an action hero he led Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Pratiggya and later Hukumat. As a romantic lead he carried films such as Jugnu and Yaadon Ki Baaraat. As a comic actor he matched anyone, above all as the prankster professor in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Chupke Chupke in 1975. His pairing with Hema Malini, in around 30 films according to The Hindu, was one of the era's defining screen partnerships.

Above all of them stands Sholay, released in August 1975, in which he played Veeru opposite Amitabh Bachchan's Jai. The film was slow in its first weeks, then grew on word of mouth into the highest grossing Hindi film of its year and one of the most watched Indian films ever made. It ran for more than five years at Bombay's Minerva Theatre. For many viewers Veeru remains the first Dharmendra they picture: loyal, funny, fearless and in love. Through these decades his Punjabi inflected Hindi and his heartland following kept him a star in single screen theatres long after fashions changed in the cities, a point The Hindu's obituary makes at length.

Later roles, production and politics

From the late 1990s he moved into character roles, appearing in Life in a... Metro, Apne, Johnny Gaddaar and the Yamla Pagla Deewana films with his sons, and winning a new generation of viewers as the romantic grandfather figure in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023. In the 1980s he had launched Vijayta Films, the production house named for his daughter, which launched the careers of his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. His final screen appearance was in Ikkis, released after his death.

Politics gave him a shorter second career. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bikaner in Rajasthan as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate and served from 2004 to 2009. Honours came late relative to his fame: the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 and the Padma Bhushan in 2012. After his death he was posthumously conferred the Padma Vibhushan at the Padma Awards 2026, as CNBC-TV18 reported in January 2026.

Family and the Deol legacy

Dharmendra married Prakash Kaur in 1954, before his film career, and they had four children, among them the actors Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. In 1980 he married the actress Hema Malini, his co-star in many of his best known films, and they had two daughters, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol. His younger brother Ajit Deol and other relatives also worked in cinema. The Deol family he founded is now into its third generation in Hindi and Punjabi films, and his sons' careers, launched under his production house, are part of his legacy as much as his own roles.

Death, honours and legacy

Dharmendra died at his home in Mumbai on 24 November 2025, aged 89, a few weeks before his 90th birthday, after a period of illness and a hospital stay earlier that month. His last rites were performed in Mumbai on 25 November. Tributes came from across Indian cinema and public life, and in Punjab his passing was mourned in Sahnewal and Dangon as the loss of a local son who had carried the district's name across the country.

His legacy is the breadth of the career: more than 300 films across 65 years, a record of hit films no Hindi actor of his era matched, and a screen personality that joined physical strength to emotional openness. The Hindu called him a dashing everyman with the heart of a poet, a village avenger who could recite poetry and shed a tear. For Punjab he remains the clearest proof of its long line to Bombay cinema: born in Nasrali, raised in Sahnewal, and never, in his own telling, very far from the fields.

ਬਾਅਦ ਦੀਆਂ ਭੂਮਿਕਾਵਾਂ, ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਜਨੀਤੀ
