Deep Sidhu: Actor and Activist from Muktsar

Deep Sidhu, born Sandeep Singh Sidhu (2 April 1984 to 15 February 2022), was a Punjabi film actor and activist from Udekaran village in Sri Muktsar Sahib district, Punjab. He became a star with the gangster film Jora 10 Numbaria and later one of the best-known and most debated voices of the 2020 to 2021 farmers' protest.

Early life

Deep Sidhu was born on 2 April 1984, according to Wikipedia, India Today and The Indian Panorama, in Udekaran village in the Muktsar tehsil of Sri Muktsar Sahib district. The Quint notes that his driving licence lists 1979 as his year of birth. India Today describes a joint family of farmers, and Wikipedia says his father, Surjit Singh Sidhu, was a lawyer. The Indian Panorama reports that the family later shifted to Bathinda, while Udekaran remained the ancestral village.

He followed his father's field and studied law. According to Wikipedia he worked in legal roles for a few years, including as legal head of Balaji Telefilms.

Career

Sidhu turned from law to modelling and won awards at the Kingfisher Model Hunt and the Grasim Mr India contest, as The Quint and The Indian Express report. His acting debut was Ramta Jogi (2015), produced by Dharmendra's Vijayta Films, which won him the PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Male Debut in Punjabi Cinema in 2016, according to Wikipedia.

His breakthrough was Jora 10 Numbaria, in which he played a gangster wronged by the system. Wikipedia and The Quint date the film to 2017, while The Indian Express dates it to 2018. He followed it with Rang Panjab (2018), Desi (2019) and Jora: The Second Chapter (2020). His film Saade Aale reached cinemas in April 2022, two months after his death.

Activism and the farmers' protest

In 2019 Sidhu campaigned for his friend Sunny Deol, then the BJP candidate for Gurdaspur. India Today reports that Deol later said he had nothing to do with the Red Fort violence. During the 2020 lockdown, The Indian Express says, he read widely on Punjab's history and posted videos on history, politics and economics that drew a large following.

When protests against the three farm laws grew in late 2020, he joined them and took part in the sit-in at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana. Farmer unions criticised his separate camp, and he said the issues went beyond the laws to Punjab's rights and federalism, according to The Indian Express and India Today.

On 26 January 2021 he was among the crowd at the Red Fort when a Nishan Sahib was hoisted. Delhi Police booked him and he was arrested on 9 February 2021. He said he was not involved in violence and had exercised his right to protest, according to Wikipedia. He was released on bail in April 2021. The Indian Express reports that a court, granting bail in a second case brought over damage to the monument, called the second arrest "vicious and sinister".

In September 2021, Wikipedia says, he formed the organisation Waris Punjab De. Before the 2022 Punjab election he campaigned for Simranjit Singh Mann of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), according to The Quint.

Death and legacy

Sidhu died on 15 February 2022, aged 37, after the vehicle he was driving hit the back of a stationary truck on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal expressway near Kharkhoda in Sonipat district, Haryana, according to police quoted by The Indian Express and The Hindu. Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed grief.

Wikipedia notes that his friend Sidhu Moose Wala later used recordings of Sidhu's speeches in his songs.
