Akshay Kumar: Bollywood Star with Amritsar Roots

Akshay Kumar (born Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia on 9 September 1967) is a Hindi film actor and producer from a Punjabi family with roots in Amritsar. Known as "Khiladi Kumar" after his 1992 breakthrough Khiladi, he has appeared in more than 150 films and won the National Film Award for Best Actor for Rustom (2016).

Early life

Kumar was born Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia into a Punjabi Hindu family. His father, Hari Om Bhatia, came from Amritsar and served in the Indian Army there before taking an accounts job with UNICEF; his mother is Aruna Bhatia. Most accounts place his birth in Delhi, where he spent his early childhood in Chandni Chowk, though some biographies give Amritsar as his birthplace.

He grew up in a joint family in Chandni Chowk, where he has recalled going to Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib with his grandmother early each morning. The family later moved to Mumbai and lived in Koliwada, which he has described as another Punjabi-dominated area. He studied at Don Bosco High School and briefly at Guru Nanak Khalsa College, then spent about five years in Bangkok learning Muay Thai while working as a cook and waiter. "You can take Akshay out of Punjab, but you can't take Punjab out of Akshay," he told an interviewer in 2016.

Career

Back in Mumbai he taught martial arts, which led to modelling. He had a brief first screen appearance in Aaj (1987), took the stage name Akshay Kumar, and played his first lead in Saugandh (1991). Khiladi (1992) made him an action star, followed by films such as Mohra (1994) and the rest of the Khiladi series.

In the 2000s he widened his range with romance in Dhadkan (2000) and Namastey London (2007) and comedy in Hera Pheri (2000), Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), Welcome (2007) and Singh Is Kinng (2008). He won Filmfare Awards for Ajnabee (2001) and Garam Masala (2005).

Films such as Special 26 (2013), Airlift (2016) and Jolly LLB 2 (2017) drew critical praise, and Rustom (2016) brought him the National Film Award for Best Actor. He produced social films Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017) and Pad Man (2018), and 2019 was one of his biggest years with Kesari, Mission Mangal, Housefull 4 and Good Newwz. In 2025 he played lawyer C. Sankaran Nair in Kesari Chapter 2, set against the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar, and also starred in Sky Force, Housefull 5 and Jolly LLB 3. His 2026 horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla performed well at the box office.

Beyond films, he hosted Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, owned the Khalsa Warriors team in the World Kabaddi League, and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009.

Kumar married actor and writer Twinkle Khanna, daughter of actors Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, on 17 January 2001. The couple have two children and keep them away from the media.
