Jasbir Jassi (born 7 February 1970) is a Punjabi singer, lyricist and actor from Dalia Mirjanpur village in Gurdaspur district. He is best known for the 1998 hit "Dil Le Gayee Kudi Gujarat Di", the songs "Kudi Kudi" and "Koka", and for singing "Laung Da Lashkara" in the film Patiala House (2011).
Early life
Jassi was born Jasbir Singh Bains in the village of Dalia Mirjanpur in Gurdaspur district, Punjab, according to Wikipedia. Speaking to PollywoodBoxOffice in 2016, he described his birthplace as "a small place called Mirzanpur, Dalian" and said he was brought up there with his family's love and support. His parents were Ajit Singh Bains and Prakash Kaur, and he has two elder sisters.
He went to the government school at Baniar, and began formal music training around Class 9 and 10. He later completed a master's in music at APJ College in Jalandhar, alongside theatre arts. He was the first musician in his family; in a 2025 Tribune report he recalled hiding his tumbi from his father, who did not approve of his music.
Career
Jassi took part in stage plays and performed at the North Zone Cultural Centre, and by the late 1980s he was singing for Punjabi films such as Passport and Zakhmi. His first album, Channa Ve Teri Channani, came out in 1993.
The breakthrough was Dil Le Gayee (1998), released by Times Music, whose title song "Dil Le Gayee Kudi Gujarat Di" made him a name across India. "Kudi Kudi" from the 1999 album of the same name followed, and the albums Nishani Pyar Di (2001), Just Jassi (2002), Mukhda Chann Varga (2004) and Akh Mastani (2007) kept him on the charts. Times of India noted in 2006 that he stood out for sur-based, melody-first performances and a five-hour daily riyaaz. By 2016 he had released thirteen albums, including Jassi: Back with a Bang (2010).
In 2011 he sang "Laung Da Lashkara" for Patiala House, composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, and the same year played his first lead role in the film Khushiyaan. In 2019 he sang and composed "Ek Onkar" for Kesari and lent his voice to "Koka" in Khandaani Shafakhana, alongside Badshah and Dhvani Bhanushali. In 2021 he released the patriotic single "Azaadi - The Independence" with Nobby Singh.
Jassi has spoken warmly of the Punjabi elders who shaped him, naming Hans Raj Hans, Puran Shah Koti and the late poet Surjit Patar, as well as his theatre years with Harpal Tiwana and Gursharan Singh. At the Cinevesture International Film Festival in March 2025 he told the audience that "Punjabis do have depth".
Family and music
Jassi has passed his love of music to the next generation. In 2024 his sons Simbaa and Jerry released their debut song "Liar", which he co-wrote under his label JJ Musics. Jassi told Hindustan Times that he had long dreamed of training at the Berklee College of Music, and that his son Sakaar went on to study there; Jerry studied sound and music production at Point Blank in London.
