Master Saleem: Sufi Voice of Mast Kalandar

Master Saleem (Saleem Shahzada) is a Punjabi, Sufi and Bollywood playback singer from Shahkot in Jalandhar district. A child star of the early 1990s, he returned in the 2000s with "Mast Kalandar" from Heyy Babyy (2007) and went on to sing hits in Hindi films, Sufi albums and devotional jagratas.

Early life

Saleem Shahzada was born in Shahkot, in the Jalandhar district of Punjab, into a musical household. His father, Ustad Puran Shah Koti, was a Sufi singer and music teacher, and Saleem began learning from him at the age of six. Reports on the singer's birth year differ, so it is left out here.

He has often described the training as strict. In a 2024 interview with Hindustan Times he said his father once hit him with a stick after his pitch went wrong on stage, and he credits that discipline for his career. A great admirer of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, he told The Tribune in 2009 that he preferred Sufi music above everything else.

Career

At seven he sang "Charkhe Di Ghook" at the opening of the Doordarshan Bathinda station, a performance that earned him the title "Master". His first album, also called Charkhe Di Ghook, followed when he was ten, and "Dhol Jageero Da" became one of the biggest Punjabi party songs of its era.

As his voice broke in the late 1990s, the offers thinned out. He came back in 2000 with the Sufi number "Aj Hona Deedar Mahi Da" on a Doordarshan New Year programme, and recorded devotional albums such as Mela Maiya Da, Aj Hai Jagrata and Meri Maiya. Around 2005 the singer Jasbir Jassi introduced him to the composer Sandeep Chowta, which led to "Sajni" on the Sony Music album Teri Sajni.

The big break came when Shankar Mahadevan heard him sing at a jagrata at the Devi Talab Mandir in Jalandhar, shown on a religious TV channel. The trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy invited him to sing "Mast Kalandar" for Heyy Babyy (2007), and the song made him a national name. Hindi hits followed: "Tashan Mein" (Tashan), "Maa Da Ladla" (Dostana, 2008), "Aahun Aahun" (Love Aaj Kal, 2009), "Humka Peeni Hai" (Dabangg, 2010), "Chamki Jawani" (Yamla Pagla Deewana) and "Rola Pe Gaya" (Patiala House, 2011). In 2021 he hosted and judged Zee Punjabi's Antakshari show.

His recent work reaches back to his roots. In 2025 he sang a reworked "Dama Dam Mast Qalandar" with the duo Sultana and Hashmat, and in July 2026 he joined Gippy Grewal and the rapper Agsy on a new version of "Dhol Jageero Da" for the film Carry On Jatta 4, composed by Gourov Dasgupta. He also sang "Tera Aashiq" for the 2026 film Ikkis.

He remains a regular on the live circuit. In March 2026 he performed at a Devi Jagran in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, telling ETV Bharat he had returned to devotional songs and bhajans, and a July 2026 concert in Surrey, British Columbia was announced.

Family

In December 2025 his father, Ustad Puran Shah Koti, died aged 72 in Jalandhar, where he lived with his son in Deol Nagar. News reports remembered him as a mentor of several Punjabi singers, among them Hans Raj Hans and Jasbir Jassi.
