Early life

Jasmine Kaur Sandlas was born on 4 September 1985 in Jalandhar, Punjab. She studied at MGN Public School in Jalandhar, and at the age of twelve her family moved to Stockton, California, where she later earned a degree in psychology. She began singing at six, encouraged by her mother, and started writing songs at sixteen — even though her parents were initially unsure about a music career. After graduation she worked odd jobs, including selling jerseys and shoes, and taught school for two years before committing to music full-time.

Career

Her first song, 'Muskan' (2008), became a hit and launched her career. Her debut album The Diamond followed the same year. In 2012 she collaborated with rapper Bohemia on the album Gulabi, which brought her recognition in mainstream Punjabi music and earned her the nickname 'Gulabi Queen'.

In 2014 she made her Bollywood playback debut with 'Yaar Na Miley' for the Salman Khan film Kick, with Yo Yo Honey Singh. The song went viral, topped charts, and won her the Screen Award for Best Female Playback and the Most Popular Song of the Year at the 2016 PTC Punjabi Film Awards. She followed with Hindi hits like 'Ishq Da Sutta' and 'Raat Jashn Di', and Punjabi favorites including 'Illegal Weapon', 'Sip Sip' and 'Taras' (for the 2024 film Munjya).

An independent artist by choice, she has appeared on TEDx Talks, MTV Coke Studio and spoken-word platforms, building a reputation as one of Punjabi music's most distinctive and outspoken voices.

Music style

Sandlas blends R&B, Hindustani classical training and Punjabi folk into a sound that is entirely her own — raw, bold and unapologetic. Her lyrics often celebrate female independence, and her voice, with its smoky edge, is instantly recognizable.

Personal life

Sandlas divides her time between India and the United States. She has spoken candidly about the struggles of being an independent female artist, and her past relationship with singer Garry Sandhu was widely covered before their reported split in 2018.

Legacy

Jasmine Sandlas proved that a Punjabi woman writing her own songs in California could conquer Bollywood and remain fiercely independent. For a generation of young Punjabi women, the 'Gulabi Queen' is a symbol of artistic freedom.
