Miss Pooja: Duet Queen of Punjabi Music

Miss Pooja is a Punjabi singer and actress from Rajpura in Patiala district, known as the Duet Queen of Punjabi music. Born Gurinder Kaur Kainth, she trained in music to master's level, taught music in a Rajpura school, and then, from her 2006 duet Jaan Ton Piyari onward, recorded at a pace no other Punjabi woman singer has matched, building a catalogue honoured for 4,500 songs and 850 music videos.

Early life and training in Rajpura

Gurinder Kaur Kainth was born on 4 December 1980 in Rajpura, Punjab, to Inderpal Kainth and Saroj Devi. Music was her subject from the start. She took a B.A. in vocal and instrumental skills from Punjabi University, then an M.A. in music from PGGCG Chandigarh, followed by a B.Ed. in music. Before she was a recording artist she was a music teacher at Patel Public School in Rajpura, and Pooja, the name she performs under, was her childhood nickname.

That training matters to her story. She arrived in the Punjabi music industry not as an untrained discovery but as a qualified teacher of the subject, in a field where women singers were then given few solo opportunities. The duet format, in which a woman's voice answered a man's, became the door she walked through, and she then widened it for everyone who followed.

How did Miss Pooja become the Duet Queen?

She became the Duet Queen by volume, speed and consistency. Her professional career began in 2006 with the duet Jaan Ton Piyari, sung with Darshan Khella. Duets with dozens of male singers followed in quick succession, and at a time when Punjabi duet songs had slipped down party playlists, her recordings put them back at the top. She toured the United States in 2006, was heard in a live session on BBC Asian Network in 2007, and toured the United Kingdom with Jazzy B in 2008.

Her first solo album, Romantic Jatt, arrived in 2009, and its song Do Nain had a music video filmed in Toronto, a sign of how large her diaspora audience had already become. The album Jattitude followed in 2012, with the video for Shona Shona filmed in Hong Kong. Alongside the albums came a long run of singles that stayed in Punjabi everyday life, among them Petrol, Date on Ford, Paani and Sohnea.

Films and Bollywood

Miss Pooja moved into acting in 2010 with two Punjabi films, Panjaban and Channa Sachi Muchi. She took the title role in Pooja Kiven Aa in 2013 and also appeared in Ishq Garaari the same year. As a playback singer she entered Bollywood with Second Hand Jawani in the film Cocktail in 2012, and later sang Malamaal in Housefull 3. She has also served as a judge on the Punjabi singing reality show Voice of Punjab, where the teacher in her found a second public role.

Records and honours

Her awards began with the UK Asian Music Awards, where she won Best International Act in 2009, Best International Album for Romantic Jatt in 2010, and Best International Act again in 2011. She won Best Female Act at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards in 2010 and a PTC Punjabi Film Award for her duet singing in Panjaban. In 2020 the International Book of Records honoured her with a hattrick of records, for the maximum number of Punjabi songs sung, at 4,500, the maximum number of music albums published, and the maximum number of music videos performed, at 850. She received the Hindustan Gaurav Award in 2021.

She has also stepped briefly toward public life beyond music, becoming affiliated with the BJP and being put forward as a candidate for the Hoshiarpur Lok Sabha reserved constituency, though music has remained the centre of her career.

In an industry that once treated women singers as guests on men's albums, she became the constant voice across hundreds of albums and thousands of songs, singing bhangra, pop, folk and religious material in the same working week.
