Rajpura is a city on the Delhi–Amritsar highway (NH-44), roughly midway between the two. It was founded as a planned township for refugees from Bahawalpur after Partition, under the Rajpura Development Ordinance of April 1949 — though its roots go back to a sarai built by Sher Shah Suri around 1540. The municipal council counted about 92,300 residents in 2011.

History
Rajpura's history has two foundings. The first belongs to the sixteenth century: Sher Shah Suri, the great road-builder, raised a sarai here around 1540–45 on the imperial highway, and the town's Thakurdwara and old core grew around the highway traffic. Local tradition also credits Raja Todar Mal — Akbar's celebrated finance minister — with the town's early layout; the GMADA master plan notes the association.
The second founding is modern and better documented. After Partition, thousands of refugees from Bahawalpur (now in Pakistan) poured into Patiala State, carrying little but the trading skills that would rebuild their lives. In April 1949 the Rajpura Development Ordinance created a planned township for them — one of Punjab's purpose-built refugee towns, laid out with residential blocks, markets and industrial plots. The Bahawalpuri community's culture — its food, its dialect, its enterprise — still defines Rajpura.
Geography & people
Rajpura sits on NH-44 (the old GT Road), roughly midway between Delhi and Amritsar, 30 kilometres from Patiala and 20 from Ambala — a natural staging post on one of India's busiest highways. The 2011 census counted 92,301 residents in the municipal council. The population is mixed — the Bahawalpuri Punjabi community, local Malwais, and migrants drawn by industry. The Nabha Power thermal plant near the town is one of Punjab's largest private power stations. Small industry, the grain market and highway commerce drive the economy, and the town's position midway on NH-44 makes it a natural halt for Delhi–Amritsar traffic — its dhabas and transport nagars never sleep.
Places of interest
The old sarai of Sher Shah Suri and the Thakurdwara are Rajpura's heritage stops, and the town's older temples and gurdwaras serve the Bahawalpuri community that built the modern city. The planned township's grid — its markets and residential sectors — is itself a document of Partition-era urbanism. The town's dhabas on NH-44 are famous with highway travellers, and the surrounding countryside offers the standard Malwa mix of wheat fields and mango orchards.
Notable people
Raja Todar Mal, Akbar's celebrated finance minister, belongs to Rajpura's founding legends, and Sher Shah Suri — the emperor who built the Grand Trunk Road — to its roadside history. The town's real makers, though, are the Bahawalpur refugees of 1947–49, who built a planned township out of fields and made it one of Malwa's industrious cities — their enterprise, not any single famous native, is Rajpura's distinction — a city built by refugees, still run on refugee energy.
