Karmabhoomi Express Fire Near Rajpura, All Safe

Four coaches of the Amritsar to New Jalpaiguri Karmabhoomi Express caught fire near Sarai Banjara station in Punjab's Patiala district on Friday, triggering panic among passengers. Every passenger got out safely and no one was hurt, railway officials said, after the train's automated safety system brought it to a stop.

Fire breaks out near Sarai Banjara

The fire broke out on the Rajpura to Sirhind section as the unreserved train passed near Sarai Banjara station. The train had left Amritsar earlier in the day and was bound for New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal. Passengers rushed out as smoke and flames spread through the coaches. Three coaches suffered severe fire damage, while a fourth was partially affected. Fire tenders and senior railway officials rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. Railway staff disconnected the overhead electric lines and detached the affected coaches to stop the fire from spreading to the rest of the train.

Over 1,500 passengers moved to safety

More than 1,500 passengers were travelling on the train, and all of them were evacuated safely. Passengers said the alarm spread quickly through the coaches and people moved to the doors as the train slowed. Because the service was unreserved, the coaches were crowded, and railway staff and local residents helped passengers, including elderly travellers and children, move away from the burning coaches to a safe distance. With the affected coaches detached, the railways arranged a replacement train to complete the journey to New Jalpaiguri. Passengers were guided on foot to a station about 500 metres away, where the replacement train was waiting. Local administration arranged vehicles to take passengers to Rajpura railway station. Northern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay said fire tenders and senior officials reached the site immediately and secured it.

Cause not yet known, inquiry ordered

The railways has ordered a high-level inquiry to establish how the fire started. A formal technical probe will inspect the electrical lines, mechanical systems and other possible causes. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Yashanjit Singh told reporters at the site that the cause was a matter of inquiry and that the immediate priority was getting every passenger home safely. The Karmabhoomi Express runs between Amritsar in Punjab and New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, and as an unreserved service it carries large numbers of migrant workers, daily travellers and families without seat assignments, which makes a quick evacuation especially difficult.
