India Beat Japan 4-1 to Win Sixth ACT Title

India roared back from a goal down to beat Japan 4-1 in the men's Asian Champions Trophy final at the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali on Thursday, 5 November, sealing a record-extending sixth title and a third championship in a row.

Japan stunned the packed home crowd when Kazumasa Matsumoto scored in the third minute, and the visitors held their 1-0 lead until half-time. India had dominated possession but could not find a way through a disciplined Japanese defence, and the defending champions went into the break chasing the game.

The early goal changed the shape of the final. Japan sat deep and looked to hit India on the break, while the hosts pushed forward in search of an equaliser and were repeatedly denied by the Japanese goalkeeper.

Four goals turn the final around

The second half belonged entirely to India. Shilanand Lakra levelled the score in the 42nd minute, and the goal opened the floodgates. Dilpreet Singh put India ahead in the 48th minute, Jugraj Singh converted a penalty corner in the 52nd, and Vivek Sagar Prasad completed the scoring in the 54th minute, four goals in 12 minutes that turned a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 win.

It was the same scoreline as the league-stage meeting between the two sides in Jalandhar, when India had also beaten Japan 4-1, and it underlined how far ahead of the field the hosts were across the tournament.

A record that keeps growing

The win gave India a sixth Asian Champions Trophy title, adding to the crowns won in 2011, 2016, 2018, 2023 and 2024. No other team has won the tournament more than twice, and India are the first side to lift the trophy three editions in a row. The team finished the tournament unbeaten, winning every match across the league stage in Jalandhar and the knockouts in Mohali.

Malaysia took the bronze medal earlier in the day, beating South Korea 5-2 in the third-place play-off.

Punjab at the heart of the tournament

The ninth edition of the tournament, played from 27 October to 5 November, was hosted across two Punjab cities, with the league stage in Jalandhar and the semi-finals and final in Mohali. The semi-final against South Korea, which India won 8-1, was the first international hockey match played at the Mohali stadium, named after the legendary Olympian Balbir Singh Sr.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh led a side coached by Craig Fulton that has now won the Asian Games gold and three straight Asian Champions Trophy titles, a run that keeps India at the top of Asian hockey.
