Arshdeep Singh Four Wickets, India Win Auckland ODI

India opened their five-match ODI series against New Zealand with a five-wicket win at Eden Park, Auckland, on Wednesday, and it was Punjab's fast bowlers who did much of the damage. Arshdeep Singh took 4 for 70 from his 10 overs, Gurnoor Brar claimed 3 for 44 and Anshul Kamboj returned 2 for 22, as New Zealand were bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs in a rain-curtailed match. India then chased a revised target of 143 in 32 overs under the DLS method, finishing on 143 for 5 in 22.4 overs, with 56 balls to spare.

Arshdeep joins an elite list

The left-arm pacer struck early, removing Will Young and Henry Nicholls for nine runs each, and returned to dismiss Kyle Jamieson and Glenn Phillips, who made 30, to complete his four-wicket haul. With that, Arshdeep became only the third Indian fast bowler to take a four-wicket haul in an ODI in New Zealand, joining Javagal Srinath and Mohammed Shami. Srinath took 4 for 23 at Auckland in 2003 and 4 for 52 at Napier in 1995, while Shami's mark was 4 for 55 at Napier. Arshdeep's figures rank as the fourth best by an Indian pacer in New Zealand. Tim Seifert top-scored for the hosts with 38, and Blair Tickner's late 34 dragged New Zealand up to 185 after the innings had threatened to end far sooner.

Kohli seals the chase, Gill praises his bowlers

Virat Kohli then made the shortened chase a formality, scoring 74 off 51 balls as India reached the target with five wickets in hand. Captain Shubman Gill, himself a Punjab player, praised his young pace attack after the match, hailing the spells of Arshdeep, Brar and Kamboj that had skittled New Zealand out. Arshdeep admitted afterwards that India had become, in his words, a little greedy late in the hosts' innings, when late hitting lifted New Zealand from a low position to 185. The spell took his tally to 12 wickets in five ODIs this year, at an average of 23.08, according to figures cited by ANI.
