Early life
Arshdeep Singh was born on 5 February 1999 in Guna, Madhya Pradesh, into a Sikh family — his father Darshan Singh served in the Central Industrial Security Force. The family later moved to Kharar, near Chandigarh, where Arshdeep grew up. He began with gully cricket before enrolling at Jaswant Rai's cricket academy in Chandigarh in 2015, where his tall left-arm action and natural swing marked him out.
Progress was rapid. He made Punjab's Under-23 side, taking eight wickets including a hat-trick against Rajasthan in the CK Nayudu Trophy, and made his List A debut for Punjab in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Before that he had already been picked for India's 2018 Under-19 World Cup squad, returning a winner's medal from New Zealand.
Career
The IPL made him. Bought by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the December 2018 auction, he debuted in April 2019 and quickly became the franchise's trusted death bowler, prized for his yorkers and a deceptive slower ball. In 2023 he broadened his game with a county stint at Kent in England.
His India debut came in a T20I against England in July 2022, followed by an ODI debut against New Zealand that November. He was India's joint-highest wicket-taker at the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA, which India won — his 17 wickets included a miserly, match-defining spell in the final against South Africa. He was part of the squads that won the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2025 Asia Cup, establishing himself as India's first-choice left-arm seamer in white-ball cricket.
Major works
His standout performances include his T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, his five-wicket hauls in both ODIs and T20Is, and his consistent IPL seasons for Punjab Kings, where his economy at the death has ranked among the league's best. His best T20I figures of 5 for 51 and ODI best of 5 for 37 underline a bowler who strikes as well as he contains.
What distinguishes him is temperament: calm under pressure, precise in execution, and tactically mature beyond his years — qualities that made captains trust him with the final overs of World Cup finals.
Off the field he is regarded as one of the most professional young cricketers in the Indian set-up — meticulous about fitness, quiet in the dressing room, and already mentoring younger Punjab pacers who see in him a path from small-town academies to World Cup finals.
Personal life
Singh lives with his family in Chandigarh. His father, after retiring from the CISF, became chief of security at a Chandigarh industrial firm. Arshdeep keeps a low public profile off the field.
Legacy
In a country that has historically struggled to produce left-arm fast bowlers, Arshdeep Singh filled the gap at exactly the right moment. His World Cup-winning spells gave India the variety its attack had long lacked, and he did it as a Punjabi boy from Kharar who learned his craft on Chandigarh's maidans — a reminder that India's fast-bowling future is being built far from the traditional centres.
